Results: 2011

The lucky winners of the Cumbria In Bloom 2011 competition were revealed at a special presentation at the Morton Manor Community Centre on September 5th 2011.  The Award Ceremony was hosted and sponsored by the Cumbria County Council Local Committee for Carlisle and their Chairman Cllr. John Mallinson open the event.  Prize winners from all over the country converged on the venue to collect their coveted awards. Every year, volunteers, businesses and local authorities work behind the scenes to keep the county’s towns and villages “blooming” lovely for both residents and visitors. The annual competition began in the late 1980s and the tourism industry is recognised with a special Cumbria Tourist Board category.

Alan Heath, Chair of Cumbria In Bloom, welcomed distinguished dignitaries, guests members of the public and the children representing a number of schools.  He went onto say that this had been the largest number of attendees for a number of years and went onto to say "you the participants, are the most important part of Cumbria In Bloom and that it is you that make the competition what it is today."  2011 saw a new Administrator in post, Elizabeth Auld who has kept and is still doing all the Committee members on their toes.  Renaming the competition "Cumbria In Bloom Pride in your community" has really hit home on what the campaign is all about.  In Bloom groups has said "that joining the competition has brought their community together and has helped to develop projects."  We have listened to your views and have updated the criteria. You are showing us the best that you have in your communities. What you are  showing, you feel is appropriate to your town, village, hamlet and group. It is important that you show what you want us to see and are judged on how you care for your surroundings. Trees, shrubs, landscape, sustainable planting and Floral features are all an important part of the competition and need to be appropriate to the setting.

Alan then went onto say "When judging this year it has felt as if the competition was alive and was meeting the challenges of today. The groups that were showing myself and my fellow judges round were keen and vibrant and reflected the high standards that were being attained."  He continued "this year Cumbria in Bloom has set up a trial run of the Cumbria Schools Garden Competition. All ages from infants to senior school take part. We acknowledge that Copeland Borough Council is running a School Garden Competition in their district and are helpful to Cumbria in Bloom.  Tickling tomatoes, carrying water, measuring sunflowers, harvesting and cooking the vegetables and fruit, even maths and science all formed a part of the competition. Orchard trees, Bug mansions, Bat boxes and willow arches all featured in the wildlife and sensory school gardens. A section of the competition is for the presentation and art associated with the garden. You can see some of these presentations set out for you in this hall.  Alan concluded by saying "Can I say to everyone that Cumbria in Bloom belongs to you?  You must come forward to help to run the events and to raise funds. The management committee will welcome people with time, energy and commitment to join in keeping Cumbria in Bloom a successful project for years to come."

There are 2 new trophies for 2011;

        The Community Champion - donated by Whitehaven In Bloom, and

        The 'Shelia Hensman Trophy - Best Overall School Garden.

Olive Clarke (Patron) made a passionate plea to the local government authorities not to forget Cumbria In Bloom when the next round of funding negotiations became available.
