Young Persons’ Painting Competition Results

2010

Schools and Young Persons Painting Competition

39 schools entered this year’s competition, an increase of 6 from 2009.  377 paintings were exhibited at the National Park Visitor Centre, Brockhole, Ambleside, until 2nd July 2010.  Whilst the organisers are delighted with the new entries they could not help feeling some disappointment in the fact that the entry is still somewhat less than they had hoped. There were 350 Schools in Cumbria who were invited to take part.

The Presentation evening was on the 2nd July when the young people and their schools were awarded their prizes and certificates.  The competition encourages the pursuit of visual art and an appreciation of flora and fauna.

Judging took place at the Lake District Brockhole Visitor Centre on the 22nd June.  The four judges including local artist Mrs Jackie Truelove all agreed that the standard was as high this year as it was last year, and represented subjects right across the suggested criteria.

"I was delighted to be invited to present the prizes and certificates for the Cumbria in Bloom children’s painting competition. I have attended this event for many years and I am always amazed at the very high standard and variety of paintings across the age groups. This year was no exception, and the judges must have had a difficult task selecting the winners.

What shines through is the enjoyment from the children and the interest of the teachers in presenting their work. It would be wonderful if even more of our county’s many schools would consider taking part next year."

Cllr. Jenny Borer - Windermere Town Council.

For 2010, new categories were introduced including ‘My Favourite Flower’ ‘Wild Flowers’ ‘My Garden.’  Last year's new category of 'School Gardens' was again proposed. The response was very good, a group winner as well as good individuals were awarded prizes.  Because the standard was so high this year in the Group entries, the judges felt that they had to award 2 extra prizes ‘Highly Commended.’

The painting adjudged best in exhibition was a delightful study of Flora and Fauna, painted by Daniel Bailey Aged 10 of Vicarage Park School Kendal. He received The Rex Marsden Medal, a Gold Certificate and a Top art prize.

The group prize which is The Rex Marsden Challenge Trophy Shield, went to Vicarage Park Church of England Primary School, Wigton for a set of paintings of Flora and Fauna.

This year, the prizes are donated by The Derwent Pencil Company of Keswick.  The awards are being presented by Councilor Mrs. Jennifer Borer of Windermere, a respected member of local government.
