Young Persons’ Painting Competition Results

2009

32 schools entered 355 paintings currently on exhibition at the National Park Visitor Centre,  Brockhole, Ambleside,  until 2nd October 2009.

The Presentation evening was on the  2nd October  at 7pm.  These   awards to the young people together with the prizes and certificates encourages the pursuit of visual art and an appreciation of flora and fauna around them.

All the paintings, which were judged at Brockhole on 18th September, were considered to be of a high standard,  though with a smaller entry than  last year.

The painting adjudged best in exhibition was a delightful study of poppies, painted by Christina Tully age 12 of Keswick School. she will receive The Rex Marsden Medal, A Gold Certificate and a major art prize.

The group prize which is The Rex Marsden Challenge Trophy shield, goes to:

Bolton's CofE Primary School Wigton for a set of paintings of pansy flowers.

This year, the prizes are donated by The Derwent Pencil Company of Keswick.

The awards are being presented by Mrs Jackie Truelove of Windermere a respected local lakes artist.

The number of entries this year were 32  Schools - (46 Last year), 22 of which had entered last year.  There were 355 paintings compared to 423 from last year).

Whilst the organisers are delighted with the new entries we cannot help feeling some disappointment in the fact that the entry is somewhat down this year. There are over 350 Schools in Cumbria who were invited to take part.

The organisers feel that the main problem could be one of communication and would be grateful for any media help in this area.

Judging the paintings took place at the Lake District Brockhole Visitor Centre on Friday the 18th September. The Judges were all agreed that the standard was as high this year as it was last year, representing subject’s right across the suggested criteria.

The new category created last year in line with RHS proposal for an extra push on schools to embrace school Gardens, was again proposed,  we asked for paintings of this subject. The response was good and a Group winner as well as a good Individual was chosen.

Every child who enters this competition receives a certificate.

The winners in the various sections also receive a prize which is very kindly donated by the Keswick Derwent Pencil Company.

The organisers are grateful to the Staff of Brockhole for accommodating the wonderful and colourful exhibition. The exhibition was on display in the cafeteria area for one week commencing 26th September to 2nd October.
