Rydal Hall Seminar

Sixty supports of Cumbria's major flower festival attended a special seminar at Rydal Hall near Ambleside to mark the beginning of the 25th Anniversary celebrations of the event.

Every year, the countywide Cumbria In Bloom competition encourages towns and villages to put on a floral show for visitors and judges, with a range of prizes awarded for the best.

Ian Stephens, Chief Executive of Cumbria Tourism, addressed the audience at Rydal on March 20th, with support for Cumbria in Bloom saying the aims of the campaign matched that of Cumbria Tourism in terms of creating pride in the area.

How to take part was the message from the Britain in Bloom chairman of judges Roger Burnett and RHS communities manager Stephanie Eynon talked about the Its Your Neighbourhood scheme.Rydal Hall Garden, Ambleside

Local finalist Kirby Stephen showed how its done through Mike Walker and Graham Robertson from Barrow demonstrated how the Marsh Street project had grown from a derelict yard to a much used and loved community garden.

Weasdale nurseries gave a sapling tree for all present to take away and plant in there own The Fountain, Rydal Hall, Amblesidetowns and villages as a reminder of the event and to kick off the year with a defiance to the elements. Cumbria in Bloom has dedicated this years event to The Flood Recovery and hopes the competition will encourage participants to use the event as a focus to renew the damaged environment.

The head gardener at Rydal Hall Iain Turnbull gave a presentation of the restoration of the gardens created by Lakeland’s internationally famous Landscape Architect Thomas H. Mawson .

The most popular afternoon workshop was about community involvement making Pride of Place the conclusion to the seminar.
